Kente Cloth

Kente cloth was developed in the 17th Century by the Ashanti people. Legend has it that the art of weaving kente was learned by observing a spider weaving its web. Kente was reserved for special occasions to be worn by royalty.

The yarns are spun from cotton and silk. Today rayon is also used. Each cloth has a motif & pattern with a special name and meaning. Names and meanings are based on important events, social codes of conduct, human behavior to name a few. The patterns come in beautiful geometric designs. The colors of kente have symbolic meanings. Women normally wear the lighter colors. Men wear strong colors such as maroon, black, navy and dark green.
